World University Rankings: PU improves by 12 notches

The result of Times World University Rankings 2021 was announced on Wednesday. The world ranking is based upon the five indicators which represent key areas in higher education excellence. These are teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

In the overall category, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, has topped the list. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been placed in the 301-350 category.

In April, seven of the top Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati, had announced they were collectively boycotting the rankings. “These IITs will reconsider their decision next year if Times Higher Education is able to convince them about the parameters and transparency in their ranking process,” their joint press statement had said.

The newer IITs continue to participate although they have slipped in the ranks as well. IIT Ropar, which was in the 301-350 bracket last year, is now in the 351-400 bracket.

Beyond 200, the THE World University Rankings does not assign individual ranks but places institutions in brackets instead.

Panjab University (PU) has improved by 12 notches in the ranking. On global level, it continues to be in the 601-800 bracket like last year. PU has shown improvement in its overall score which is now in the bracket of 30.2-36.3 compared to last year’s bracket of 28.3-35.2.
