Baba Ram Singh, a priest of a Gurdwara in Haryana who joined the farmers’ protest, committed suicide by shooting himself on Wednesday evening. The 65-year-old was at the Delhi-Sonepat border at Kundli, where he reached on Tuesday evening.

An official of Sonepat police said they had received a call that Sant Ram Singh, who hailed from Singhra village in Nissing area of Karnal district, allegedly shot himself. He was rushed to a hospital in Panipat where doctors declared him brought dead.

In a note, he said he was sacrificing his life “to express anger and pain against the government’s injustice.”

“I feel the pain of farmers fighting to ensure their rights… I share their pain because the government is not doing justice to them. To inflict injustice is a sin, but it is also a sin to tolerate injustice. To support farmers, some have returned their awards to the government.  I have decided to sacrifice myself,” read the note.

Body of Baba Ram Singh has been kept in Nanaksar Gurdwara in Karnal’s Singhra village for devotees to pay homage to the departed soul. The cremation will be held on Friday.

A large number of devotees were assembling at the Gurdwara and a heavy deployment of police force was witnessed. SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal along with his wife former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal also arrived at the Gurdwara to pay homage. Harsimrat Badal criticised the Union government for not listening to the issues of the farmers. The protest is the farmers right and farmers are dying daily, she said, adding, Baba Ram Singh “sacrificed for the sake of humanity.”
