In the second wave of Covid pandemic, online frauds are increasing in Chandigarh wherein people are getting duped on the pretext of getting jobs in the country and abroad. Fraudsters are luring unemployed residents with attractive packages through social media sites and websites. Statistics show that in the last five months, 128 complaints have been received by the Chandigarh cyber cell.
One reason cited for this was that unemployed people sitting were constantly and desperately looking for jobs on online websites. Taking advantage of this, fraudsters lure them by promising jobs with handsome salaries.
Fraudsters manage their activities through websites. When a person visits these websites and registers, he or she is then contacted on the mail or phone with job offers. Not only this, the fraudsters are also providing visas.
Recently, a sector 29 resident fell prey to an online fraud after Rs 25,700 was debited from his account. Complainant Mangat Ram reported that he had received a message about receiving a new credit card, followed by a call from a fraudster, who posed as a bank executive. The fraudster sent a link on his mobile phone and asked for some information. Soon, four transactions were made from the credit card.
Sector-49 resident Deepak Kumar Raina also became a victim of online fraud. He told the police that he had applied for a job through a website where he was offered a job in the UK with salary of 8,000 pounds. All the necessary documents were obtained from him and an interview was conducted on the phone. In the name of different fees, lakhs were gradually debited from his account.
Keep these points in mind to keep safe from online fraud:
1. Always surf a website that is credible and trustworthy. Avoid any site that you haven’t heard of. You can also check for reviews.
2. Avoid applying for a job on an unknown website.
2. Remember that you do not have to fill any bank detail in an application on any website.
4. If someone asks for registration fee in the name of getting a job, then be cautious.
5. Avoid clicking on any spam link that you receive on mail or the phone.
6. Immediately report the matter to the cyber police in case of fraud.
7. Never share your OTP number, credit or debit card number with anyone.
