Shillong turns pink as Cherry Blossoms bloom in the city

As Covid restricts the movements of human beings, it allows flora and fauna to flourish. Had it not been for the pandemic, many travellers would have booked tickets to Shillong in Meghalaya for the India International Cherry Blossom Festival which has been cancelled this year.

Shillong hosts the only Cherry Blossoms festival in India which looks like a painting with whimsical colours of pink and white at this time of the year. It is expected that the flowers will continue to bloom till the end of November.

Japan is also renowned for its cherry blossom festival. However, in Japan the flowers bloom during the spring season. Every year, the Cherry Blossom Festival hosts events such as fitness art, fashion show, rock concerts and much more. This year, people of Meghalaya will celebrate the festivals through virtual mode.

Due to the pandemic, the Meghalaya government is currently allowing travellers with a Covid-19 negative RT-PCR/ CBNAAT/ TruNAT report from a recognised laboratory, not older than 72 hours. Only symptomatic patients will be required to undergo mandatory paid quarantine and travellers must have the ArogyaSetu App.
