Rohit Sharma sets eyes for the 2027 World Cup

Indian Cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has squashed all talks of imminent retirement and revealed his anticipations for two major trophies in the coming years: The World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025 and the 50-over World Cup in 2027.

Rohit Sharma amidst speculation of retirement swirling around the cricketing world, the Indian Captain has denied all these speculations. The 36-year-old batsman’s comments come after a string of near misses for the Indian team under his leadership. The heartbreaking loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final left a deep scar, particularly for Rohit, who openly expressed his desire to lift the coveted 50-over trophy. However, his recent statements indicate a renewed determination and a burning ambition to conquer the cricketing world.

While many believed the 2023 World Cup might be Rohit’s last chance at ODi glory, how own words paint a different picture. Despite reaching the 40-year mark by the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Rohit remains firmly in contentions for a spot in the squad.

“I haven’t really thought about retirement,” Rohit declared on Gaurav Kapur’s show, Breakfast with Champions. “But I don’t know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time – so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don’t know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully, India makes it.”

Rohti’s leadership has seen India come agonisingly close to major titles on two occasions. The team fell short in the WTC final against Australia in June 2023, followed by another defeat to the same opponents in the World Cup final a few months later.

The focus on the T20 World Cup also throws light on the ongoing debate surrounding Virat Kohli’s place in the squad. While questions swirled about Kohli’s future in the shortest format, the former captain has silenced his critics with a stellar performance, currently leading the IPL’s Orange Cap race.

With the T20 World Cup scheduled for June 2024, just six days after the IPL final, Rohit is using the ongoing tournament to fine-tune his form. His recent knock of 38 runs off 24 balls, laced with three fours and three sixes, played a pivotal role in the Mumbai Indian’s victory against their opponents.

Soon, England will shield their title in the T20 World Cup. India, Australia, and Pakistan are firm rivals. The World Cup will be in the West Indies and the USA. In the IPL, Rohit’s play is vital for his spot in the Indian team. Beyond this, he vows to guide the team in the 2027 World Cup for a win. His drive to lead India to victory shows his lasting love for the game.
