PGI not in favour of opening of OPDs

Despite the decline in Covid cases, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) administration is not yet in favour of opening of OPDs.

A statement issued by PGIMER said that the possibility of Covid’s graph rising in the festive season cannot be ruled out. Appealing people to continue consultation through the telephone facility, PGI said that its experts are monitoring the situation and making efforts to reopen the OPD.

OPD facility was closed due to the Covid pandemic on March 28. On normal days, 12,000 to 15,000 patients were treated per day. So, PGIMER had started tele-consultancy facility from May 19.

PGI director Prof Jagat Ram said that the institute is focused on treating the non-Covid patients. “As many as four lakh patients have been counselled through the telephone since May. In addition, 27,722 patients have undergone surgery. Apart from this, OPDs of gynaecology, radiotherapy and eye remained operational,” he said. “PGI is fully conscious of its responsibilities towards non-Covid patients and is also eager to open the OPD. As the pandemic is not over yet, crowding at the hospital can be harmful. So, we will have to wait a little longer as a hasty decision can endanger anyone’s life,” said Prof Jagat Ram, director of the hospital.
