Delhi Police Busts Massive Spice Adulteration Racket

In a major crackdown, Delhi Police has brought up a large scale operation  involving the production and sale of adulterated spices in the city’s Karawal Nagar area. The raid, conducted on May 1st, 2024, led to the seizure of staggering 15 tonnes of fake masala and the arrest of three individuals.

The arrested suspects, identified as Dilip Singh (46), Sarfaraj (32), and Khurseed Malik (42), were allegedly running two separate processing unit where they manufactured and distributed these adulterated spices to local markets and vendors across Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR)

As mentioned by a senior police officer, what makes this case particularly concerning is the use of harmful and inedible substances in the production process. The seized spices were found to contain a concoction of rotten leaves, spoiled rice and millets, wood dust, chilli heads, acids, and oils—a far cry from the genuine ingredients consumers expect.

The investigation came into existence after authorities received intelligence about the illegal activity. Acting proactively, a police team raided both processing units on May 1st. Singh was caught at one of the facilities, where he was making these spices using the aforementioned adulterants. Singh and Sarfaraj, believed to be the owners of the units, initially attempted to flee but were eventually captured.

Moving ahead, the interrogation unearthed a disturbing scheme driven by greed. While Singh confessed to the ownership of the manufacturing units, Malik admitted to supplying adulterated spices. Further investigation led to discovery of another processing unit on Kali Khata Road, where Sarfarah was also found involved in the production of fake masala.

The disregard for public health is the major concern here; thus, the Department of Food & Safety has been brought in to conduct inspections and collect samples of the seized spices for further analysis.

Police officials highlighted that selling of these cheap and unadulterated product at the price of genuine products, the accused were not only cheating consumers but also putting their health to risk. A case has been registered under relevant section of the law, and all three accused have been remanded to judicial custody.
