Cyber crimes: Are you following these tips to protect yourself?

The sudden wave of Covid-19 pandemic has drastically changed people’s way of living and working. Earlier, employees were needed to come into the office daily, but now, it has been replaced with the work-from-home models and we heavily rely on online transactions and exchange of information.

HDFC Bank Ltd on Tuesday launched “Mooh Band Rakho” campaign to increase awareness on cyber frauds and preventing them.

It will be conducting 1,000 workshops in the next four months across the country. It supports the International Fraud Awareness Week 2020, the global movement to minimise the impact of fraud which is being held from November 15 to 21. This is the second year HDFC Bank is participating in this. The “Mooh Band Rakho” campaign was initially launched to fight Covid and it has now been extended to fighting cyber fraud.

Following simple steps such as not sharing card details, CVV, expiry date, OTP NetBanking/MobileBanking login ID and password over phone, SMS, email and social media can help general public keep their money safe.

Secure Banking tips:

• Do not share PIN, passwords, bank details with anyone.

• Keep your bank informed when you change your address, contact number or email ID.

• Always save your regional phone banking number on your contacts list, which will help in case of emergencies when your card is lost or stolen or you get a suspicious transaction alert.

• Do not conduct banking transactions from your mobile, tablet, laptop, when it is connected to public / free Wi-Fi, which is open and therefore unsecured.

How to protect yourself against cybercrime?

  • Use a full-service internet security suite
  • Use strong passwords- Don’t repeat your passwords on different sites, and change your passwords regularly. Make them complex. That means using a combination of at least 10 letters, numbers, and symbols. A password management application can help you to keep your passwords locked down.
  • Keep your software updated- This is especially important with your operating systems and internet security software. Cybercriminals frequently use known exploits, or flaws, in your software to gain access to your system.
  • Manage your social media settings- Keep your personal and private information locked down. Social engineering cybercriminals can often get your personal information with just a few data points, so the less you share publicly, the better.
  • Talk to your children about the internet and teach them about acceptable use of the internet. Make sure they know that they can come to you if they’re experiencing any kind of online harassment, stalking, or bullying.

Know what to do if you become a victim- If you believe that you’ve become a victim of a cybercrime, you need to alert the police. This is important even if the crime seems minor.
