Chandigarh’s first Material Recovery facility (MRF)-cum-garbage transfer station was inaugurated by UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore at Industrial Area, Phase 2, on Friday. Around 150 vehicles will carry garbage to this centre for disposal. Two more facilities are being constructed in Phase 1 and Dadu Majra which will become operational by the end of the month and in July, respectively.
Corporation commissioner KK Yadav said that door-to-door garbage collection vehicles will carry the garbage to the three centres. Till now, these vehicles used to go to the dumping ground or waste disposal plant, where a huge line used to form. The three centres will replace the Sehaj Safai Kendras in a phased manner. Civic body’s new two-bin vehicles will lift the segregated waste from households and transport the waste directly to the recovery facilities. Tippers will then shift the wet waste to the processing plant.
Around Rs 32 crore has been spent on this project, built under the Smart City project. When all the MRFs start functioning, a list of vehicles will be prepared according to zones. Moreover, the door-to-door garbage pickers who have not been given a vehicle, will be deployed in the MRF.
By July, the Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system will also commence under the Smart City project. In this, details of location of the vehicles and how much garbage was picked up will be known. If a vehicle does not reach an area, it will be immediately detected on the SCADA system and will be replaced by another vehicle. For petrol, the corporation has already put a chip on the tank of the vehicles. This will also increase the efficiency of the employees.
