Chandigarh to Introduce India’s First ‘Tree Map’ Using GIS Technology

Chandigarh is about to write history as the first city to lay down a treemap through modern Geographic Information System (GIS) innovations in India. This groundbreaking initiative will see every tree in the city mapped, thus helping to manage and conserve green spaces better. During a critical meeting, the expert committee of the Union Territory (UT) Forest and Wildlife Department recently approved the proposal.

The ‘treemap’ will function as an all-inclusive, geotagged list of all trees in Chandigarh, providing a graphic depiction of the green resources of the city. High-ranking authorities in attendance emphasized the significance of moving the project along quickly, giving the engineering and municipal corporations instructions to collect comprehensive data on every tree categorized according to the avenue. The objective is to create an organized system that allows for better tracking and maintenance of Chandigarh’s tree population.

The draft of the tree map, which will include vital information about each tree, is expected to be presented at the next committee meeting. This draft will play a critical role in finalizing the comprehensive inventory of Chandigarh’s trees. In addition to mapping, a thorough health assessment of the trees will be conducted by the Forest Research Institute (FRI). This evaluation aims to gather accurate, up-to-date information regarding the trees’ health and other essential parameters, ensuring a robust understanding of the current status of the city’s urban forestry.

The scientific management of Chandigarh’s green areas and in-depth study would be made possible by the incorporation of GIS technology. The city’s urban forestry requirements will be better tracked, maintained, and strategically planned with the help of the geotagging of the trees. An important development in urban environmental management is the tree map’s deployment, which encourages efficient and well-researched conservation techniques.

Chandigarh is recognized for its well-thought-out design and abundant vegetation, combining contemporary architecture with the allure of the natural world. The city’s dedication to improving its green areas through this creative effort is expected to significantly enhance the experiences of both inhabitants and tourists, including attractions like the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake.
