In an attempt to preserve law and order, the Chandigarh government is taking strong action against owners of public amusement places that disrupt the calm with loud music or frequent disruptions. This action is based on the Chandigarh Home Department’s Controlling of Places of Public Amusement policy, which was notified in 2016.
A meeting was held by the district magistrate-chaired nodal committee to solve the problem with this issue. The municipal commissioner, senior superintendent of police (SSP), estates officer, Health services director, excise and taxation commissioner, as well as a labor commissioner, were some of the representatives who attended this meeting which was aimed at enforcing compliance guidelines that would reduce noise pollution and other related disruptions in these areas.
The committee’s focus is on a range of public amusement venues such as discotheques, pool cafes, virtual reality game parlours, bowling alleys, and other establishments that offer music, dancing, food, and alcohol. These venues operate commercially, aiming for profit while providing entertainment services.
During the meeting, the SSP, health services director, excise and taxation commissioner, and labour commissioner were tasked with conducting surveys to identify all places of public amusement currently operating in Chandigarh. They are expected to compile and submit a comprehensive list to the district magistrate’s office within 15 days.

Following this identification process, the deputy commissioner’s office will provide these establishments an opportunity to obtain the necessary permission certificates as per the 2016 policy. Venue operators will have a 30-day window to comply with the requirements and secure their certificates. Any venue failing to obtain the requisite permissions within this period will face closure until further notice.
This crackdown is a proactive step by the Chandigarh administration to ensure public order and address residents’ concerns about noise pollution and related disturbances. By enforcing the Controlling of Places of Public Amusement policy, the administration aims to strike a balance between business interests and community well-being.
These measures highlight the administration’s commitment to creating a harmonious urban environment where entertainment and peace can coexist.
