Pakistan reached out to India, and the ceasefire was negotiated directly between the two countries, the government said on Saturday, confirming the truce after days of military action and heightened tension between the two neighbours. Pakistan initiated contact with India, and both sides agreed to a ceasefire, effective from 5 pm Saturday, after direct talks between their military officials, the government said.
This came after US President Donald Trump claimed the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was the result of US-mediated talks.
“The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 15.30 hours (3.30 pm) this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would cease all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea with effect from 1700 hours (5 pm),” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.
The Foreign Secretary, in a brief press conference announcing the ceasefire agreement, added, “Instructions have been given on both sides to implement this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will speak again on May 12.
Minutes before India confirmed the ceasefire and detailed the talks, President Trump claimed it was the result of US-mediated discussions between the two nations.”After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.
