Yesterday Chandigarh was stunned when ASI Vijender Singh, a prime suspect in an alleged case of bribery, was found dead in his vehicle. These events came to light when Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials set a sting operation at Sector 26 police station following a possible solicitation allegation.
According to a CBI complaint, ASI Singh allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹40,000 to influence the investigation of an attempt-to-murder case registered in March. The complainant, the sister of one of the accused, claimed the bribe amount was eventually negotiated down to ₹20,000.
As part of the sting operation, the complainant visited the police station to deliver the money. Sources allege ASI Singh asked her to place the cash in a file and then abruptly left the room, instructing another ASI, Satish, to hold onto it. The CBI team then apprehended ASI Satish and searched the accused’s residence.
Later in the evening, when ASI Singh was discovered unconscious in his automobile parked close to Sectors 40 and 41, the situation tragically turned south. Authorities believe he took his own life by ingesting something toxic. When he arrived at the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, ASI Satish was released in the evening; however, he will be required to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
Serious questions are raised by this occurrence, especially regarding law enforcement corruption and the possible repercussions for those involved. To ascertain the precise circumstances surrounding the purported bribe and ASI Singh’s possible suicide, the CBI is probably going to carry out multiple inquiries. It would also be necessary for the inquiry to ascertain if ASI Satish was aware of his participation in the purported bribery plot.
