According to reports, not a shopkeeper has shown interest in the prolonged operation where a recent regulation change in Chandigarh allows establishments to remain open 24/7. This information is provided one week after the new policy went into force.
The Chandigarh government devised this strategy to boost economic growth and facilitate businesses. At the same time, shop owners have raised questions as to whether it is viable or profitable to keep open all day without any breaks.
Challenges for Shopkeepers
Shopkeeper associations, like the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM), highlight the financial strain of operating 24/7. Increased manpower would be required for three shifts, leading to higher costs. Additionally, concerns exist about the lack of customers during night hours, making the extended hours potentially unproductive.
Security is another major concern. Shopkeepers are apprehensive about operating late at night due to the risk of theft or other security issues.
Limited Appeal
Shopkeeper associations believe the policy might be beneficial for specific sectors like restaurants and fast-food outlets that cater to late-night customers. However, for traditional retail shops, the advantages seem limited.

Looking Forward
The UT Labour Department is taking steps to address the lack of awareness about the policy. They are organizing informational camps across various markets in the city to explain the details and benefits of the 24/7 option.
The department is also urging shopkeepers to register with them through an online portal. This registration is mandatory for any shop considering an extended operation.
While the future of 24/7 shops in Chandigarh remains uncertain, the coming weeks may see if any shopkeepers take advantage of the new policy after attending the awareness camps
