PU’s dental college to reopen in a phased manner

Following the instructions of the Dental Council of India (DCI), Panjab University’s (PU’s) Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital is planning to invite students for regular classes in a phased manner and faculty has been asked to report from Tuesday.

Principal Hemant Batra said that in the first phase, regular classes of MDS students will start from Wednesday. After this, classes of BDS students will also be conducted gradually.

He said that as dental students have to practice at clinics and lab, it becomes difficult to take classes online. He informed that every student coming to the department has to bring the Covid report. Officials say that the hostel facility will be arranged soon after the permission of higher officials.

DCI guidelines

According to the instructions issued by DCI, college authorities may reopen their campuses in a phased manner, ensuring safety, health and well-being of students, faculty and staff. They should also be equipped to handle any eventuality arising due to Covid-19.

The guidelines mandate physical distancing of six feet and use of face masks. For clinical matters, DCI has prohibited attendants’ entry in the clinical area, except those with paediatric, geriatric and physically challenged patients, with all safety measures. Moreover, all dental procedures as prescribed in DCI Curriculum (BDS Course Regulations 2007) should be carried out in the clinics by students and faculty members with appropriate protection.
