No let up: Spike in Covid cases

In the biggest single-day spike, 172 cases of coronavirus were reported in Panchkula on Wednesday, taking the tally to 1,829.

It also includes Congress leader Ranjeeta Mehta and her husband who tested positive. She shared her health status on social media that their reports came out to be positive and they have home quarantined themselves.

According to the daily bulletin shared by the health department, a total 172 cases were reported in the Panchkula district, out of which eight were traced on Tuesday and 164 were reported on Wednesday.

The fresh cases include 71 from Kalka, 21 from Nanakpur, 15 from Pinjore, 14 from Surajpur, 7 from Sector 6, five from Sector 16, four each from Sector 10, Sector 15, Sector 25 and Sector 17, three each from Old Panchkula, Sector 12A and Sector 12, two each from Raipur Rani, Sector 4, Sector 26, Sector 31, Sector 7 and MDC Sector 5, one each from Sector 11 and Sector 20.

In Mohali, 86 new cases were reported on Wednesday, crossing the 3,000 mark, and three people became victims to the virus taking the toll to 67. The Covid cases stand at 3,037.

On Tuesday, the district had witnessed 7 deaths, highest record of deaths in a single day.

Mohali civil surgeon Dr Manjit Singh said, “The cases are rising due to extensive contact tracing and most persons, who become spreaders, have travel history from other states.”
