Xiaomi Mi Music, Mi Video services now in India; Here’s everything you need to know

Xiaomi on Wednesday announced the launch of two new internet services in India — Mi Music and Mi Video. For Mi Music, the company has partnered with Hungama to offer more than 10 million tracks to users for free. The application comes with support for 13 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali and Marathi, among others.

Mi Music, which competes with the likes of Google Play Music, comes with a Dynamic Lyrics feature for karaoke enthusiasts. “Now, sing along with lyrics of your favorite track or jump onto your favorite part of the song with just one click,” said the company in a tweet.

As with Google Play Music, Mi Music will allow users to stream music from Hungama as well as play downloaded music on the device. The home screen will feature music from different albums, similar to its PatchWall OS that runs on its smart TVs. The application will get new features such as music videos, personalized recommendations, themes and more tracks in coming months.

Xiaomi claims that Mi Music is one of the most used applications by Mi users. The application has seven million daily active users, said Xiaomi VP Manu Kumar Jain in a tweet.

The Mi Music is available to Xiaomi users starting today.

Xiaomi had invested $25 million in Hungama in 2016. This was first investment in any Indian company by Xiaomi. After having dominated the budget smartphone segment in India, the company has expanded its portfolio with smart TVs, which also feature content from The Viral Fever, Sony Liv and other OTT service providers.

The application allows users to cast content to any smart TVthrough DLNA and Miracast wireless technologies. It also supports Picture in Picture mode, which essentially allows users to watch videos on the Mi Video app and use other application at the same time. The application supports 15 Indian languages and comes with personalized recommendations.

Just like Mi Music, Xiaomi’s video platform has the option to play downloaded videos on the device. It also has an enhanced player for seamless user experience. It has quick gestures – play seek, toggle volume and brightness among others. A stable version of the application will be rolled out in the second week of this month. The application also gives users the option to control the playback speed.

Xiaomi further claims its Mi Video features “India’s largest content integration” which delivers more than 500,000+ hours of content. The company said it had teamed up with some major content providers in India such as Voot, Hungama, Alt Balaji and ZEE5 among others. Xiaomi plans to add more content partners in coming months for its new Video platform. Xiaomi adds its video platform has seen a “phenomenal user growth” in India. Since January 2017, the Mi Video platform has seen a 500% user growth in India.
