On July 26, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Shinkhun La Tunnel in Ladakh- the highest tunnel globally. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) plans to construct the 4,800-meter-tall Shinkhun La Tunnel between Manali and Leh via the Nimu Padam Darcha route. After he spoke at the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas festivities in Kargil, PM Modi gave his “first blast” at the significant place, marking the beginning of the project.
With its projected all-weather connection and potential to become the longest tunnel in the world at 7.1 kilometres, this tunnel would greatly improve the strategic infrastructure of the area. Thirty minutes will be all it takes to go across the Shinkun region thanks to the twin-tube tunnel, which has cross passages every 500 meters. Along with enhancing military logistics, this project will accelerate Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh’s social and economic growth.

The sections that are now impassable owing to excessive snowfall—which buries them under 15-20 feet of ice for around five months out of the year—will be avoided by the Shinkhun La Tunnel. The tunnel will significantly increase accessibility and communication by offering an all-season path, reducing the difficulties brought on by the severe weather in the area.
The BJP government’s emphasis on strengthening border infrastructure in response to China’s geopolitical threats is further demonstrated by the tunnel’s development. India will be able to maintain maximum defence preparedness because of the more efficient mobility of soldiers and equipment made possible by this tunnel.
