Kuala Lumpur

In the absence of Lee Chong Wei, the national badminton squad are banking on the luck of the draw as the Indonesia Asian Games gets underway this week.

Malaysia, seeded only fifth, will hope to avoid some of the bigger names in the first round of the knockout stage competition.

Defending champions China are the top seeds, followed by hosts Indonesia, Japan and Taiwan.

At the draw ceremony on Thursday in Jakarta, China are top seeded ahead of Japan and Taiwan.

Based on the round of 16 format, the winners of the first round will automatically qualify for to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and final.

The national badminton squad were dealt a huge blow when Chong Wei had to withdraw due to illness. The BA of Malaysia have replaced him with independent shuttler Liew Daren, following his fine run to the semi-finals of the recent World Championships in Nanjing, China.

Apart from Daren, the other players in the squad are Lee Zii Jia, Leong Jun Hao, Soong Joo Ven, Goh V Shem, Tan Wee Kiong, Ong Yew Sin, Teo Ee Yi, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Soon Huat.
