Voting to elect new Vice President begins; Modi first to cast his vote

Voting for electing the new Vice President began here on Saturday.Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his vote.

A long queue of MPs was seen well before the start of voting.As many as 543 of Lok Sabha MPs and 237 Rajya Sabha MPs, including the nominated members, constitute the electoral college for the election.

BJP members and ministers in the queue were seen showing the victory mark.Voting will continue till 5pm. Counting of votes will take place in the evening.West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has decided to abstain from voting giving added advantage to ruling NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar.With its own 394 MPs the BJP hopes to cross the 500 mark in favour of Dhankhar with the support of BJD, YSRCP, BSP and others.
