Validity of CTET, TET extended to lifetime

The validity of the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) and various state TETs has been extended to lifetime by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Earlier, the validity of various TET certificates was seven years from the date of issue.

The decision to extend the validity was taken by the NCTE at its 50th General Body meeting on September 29.

As per the statement released by the Council on October 13 titled ‘Minutes of the 50th Meeting of the General Body of NCTE held on 29th September 2020”, the Council considered the agenda item and approved the validity of the CTET, TET certificate changing it from 7 years to lifetime. This provision would have a prospective effect and for those who have already passed out (already having TET certificate), NCTE would take legal action and will act accordingly.

The dates from when this extension would be applicable have not been announced yet. As per reports, the respective states and boards will notify the implementation of such a decision after the NCTE officially notifies the same. CBSE and state education boards conduct the CTET, TET exams to certify the eligibility of candidates to teach at the schools affiliated to the respective boards. Boards are supposed to conduct the TET exam at least twice in a year but most boards have not been able to meet the criteria.
