The Engineering Department of UT administration has started preparations for building bicycle tracks in various sectors of the city and issued a tender to prepare cycle tracks in Sector-47C and Sector-31B.
Public Bike Sharing System has been started in the city to promote cycling, but people complain about the bicycle tracks which have not been built in many sectors. The UT administration is going to build bicycle tracks in Sector-47C and 31B at a cost of ₹37 lakh.
Moreover, road widening work will be carried out from SDM office in Industrial Area Phase 1 to Hallomajra Chowk. Bicycle tracks will also be built there and lights will be installed.
A bicycle track will also be constructed on the road going to Mullanpur via the marble market of Dhanas. Tenders for both these works have been issued and a company has been assigned the work. Significantly, these two areas have the highest number of people commuting by cycles, but still no track had been built there.
An official of the UT administration said that the work of installing lights on the cycle tracks on city’s public roads, garden paths, Vidya Path, Chandi Path is going on, while the lights on the bicycle tracks of Sector-41/42 are operational. It is to be noted that about five years ago, the construction of bicycle track was started in Chandigarh and till now the Engineering Department of the administration has constructed about 210kms bicycle track. A total expenditure of around ₹22 crore has been incurred on this.
