Union Minister Suresh Angadi dies of Covid

Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi, who was being treated for Covid-19, passed away at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, on Wednesday night.

He is survived by his mother, wife, and two daughters. The 65-year-old BJP leader, tested positive on September 11. A lawyer by training, he was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and won continuously from Belagavi constituency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and tweeted, “Suresh Angadi was an exceptional karyakarta, who worked hard to make the party strong in Karnataka. He was a dedicated MP and effective Minister, admired across the spectrum. His demise is saddening. My thoughts are with his family and friends in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”

Other Union Ministers who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 so far include Home Minister Amit Shah, Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Choudhary, Ayush Minister Shripad Nayak, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, MoS for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Covid cases in India

Meanwhile, India’s Covid-19 cases breached the 57 lakh mark and over 46 lakh people have recovered from the disease, pushing the national recovery rate to 81.55%, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The total cases stand at 57, 32,518 with 86,508 people testing positive in a day, while the death toll climbed to 91,149 with 1,129 people losing battle against the disease in a span of 24 hours.

The total recoveries have surged to 46, 74,987, bringing down the number of active cases to 9, 66,382.
