Ward No. 12 councillor Udayvir Singh Dhillon, 32, was unanimously elected the president of the Zirakpur Municipal Council for a tenure of five years.
Son of Dera Bassi Congress in-charge Deepinder Singh Dhillon and first-time councillor, Udayvir said, “Allround development will be done in Zirakpur and illegal constructions stopped. Bringing water from the Kajauli waterworks will be my priority to end water shortage in the city.”
Congress candidates raised their hands in approval to elect the new president during a meeting convened by Dera Bassi SDM Kuldeep Bawa. However, the councillors did not elect the senior vice-president and vice-president. New president said that the elections for other two posts will be held in the next meeting.
The police did not allow mediapersons to enter the hall and witness the meeting in the MC office, Zirakpur.
On the other hand, all eight Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillors boycotted the first meeting. Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma and eight Shiromani Akali Dal councillors left the venue after the oath-taking ceremony.
They said that they had given a representation to the sub divisional magistrate (SDM) for holding elections of all three posts as it is unconstitutional to hold elections of one post. Sharma said, “It is for the first time in the history of the Zirakpur Municipal Council that only the president has been elected while senior vice-president and vice-president have not been elected as per the rules.”
A meeting to elect the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor and the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected councillors of the Mohali MC have been put off till April 12.
Udayvir Dhillon is also the Punjab Youth Congress general secretary. He won from Ward No. 12 by defeating SAD candidate Dilbag Singh by 700 votes. He did his schooling from St John’s High School in Sector 26 and then pursued five-year law from Punjabi University, Patiala.
