Two Families from Haryana Gift Nine Lives Through Organ Donation

In a touching move of humanity, two families from Haryana transformed their tragedies into rays of hope for others. The lives of 24-year-old Shubham and 18-year-old Preet, tragically cut short by fatal injuries, found new purpose as their organs became life-saving gifts for nine individuals in need.

Shubham who is a young student from Kaithal had a tragic road accident on May 7, 2016. Despite efforts by medical practitioners in PGI Chandigarh, Shubham’s health condition became worse until he was declared brain dead by a committee of brain death certification that sat on the ninth day after his admission to this hospital.

Amidst the anguish of loss, Shubham’s family displayed extraordinary courage by consenting to organ donation, igniting a beacon of hope for five individuals in desperate need. Dr. Vipin Koushal, the medical superintendent at PGIMER and nodal officer for the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO), oversaw the process meticulously. Following established protocols, Shubham’s liver, kidneys, pancreas, and corneas were procured for transportation.

Although a suitable recipient for the liver was not immediately available at PGIMER, advanced cross-matching identified a compatible patient – a 34-year-old woman awaiting transplant at ILPBS Hospital in New Delhi. To ensure swift and safe transportation, a green corridor was arranged between PGIMER and Mohali airport, facilitating the timely transfer of the life-saving organ to its recipient in Delhi.

Shubham’s kidney offered renewed hope to two individuals battling critical health conditions. One kidney was allocated to a 39-year-old man undergoing prolonged dialysis, while the other went to a 34-year-old diabetic in need of a kidney-pancreas transplant, heralding a new chapter of vitality and freedom from illness. Additionally, Shubham’s corneas bestowed the gift of sight upon two individuals suffering from corneal blindness.

On April 29th, Mehtab’s family shared the same tragic fate when their daughter, Preet, died in a fatal accident the family of eighteen-year-old Mehtab too from Haryana experienced a similar emotionally critical situation when their daughter, Preet, got involved in an accident on April 29th and died from injuries sustained. However, despite being overwhelmed by grief from losing her, Mehtab’s parents, Joginder Pal Singh, and Pinky Rani, chose to donate her organs for transplantation so that she could save four other serious patients’ lives.

Preet’s liver found its way to Max Hospital, Saket, facilitating a vital transplant, while her pancreas and one kidney were directed to PGIMER, Chandigarh, providing another individual with a fighting chance. The remaining kidney journeyed to Alchemist Hospital, Panchkula, where Preet had initially received treatment, offering a lifeline to a patient battling critical kidney failure. Mirroring Shubham’s case, green corridors were established to ensure prompt and efficient delivery of these life-saving organs to their recipients.
