Thailand Open: PV Sindhu beats Soniia Cheah, progresses to semi-finals

Bangkok

Second seed PV Sindhu eased into the women’s singles semi-finals of the $350,000 Thailand Open badminton tournament with a straight games victory at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok on Friday.

The Indian overcame Malaysian Soniia Cheah 21-17, 21-13 in 36 minutes in their first ever meeting.

World No.3 Sindhu will next take on World No.29 Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia in the last four against whom the Hyderabadi has a perfect 2-0 career record.

Sindhu, the last Indian left in the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament, did not start well and was trailing 8-12 in the first game. However, she came back strongly to take the lead and clinch the first game on her second game point.

It was close in the beginning of the second game till the halfway mark when Sindhu led 11-10. But post the breather, the Indian notched nine straight points to reach match point in no time.

Soniia saved three but it was too much to ask from the Malaysian and Sindhu closed the game in her favour to enter the semis.
