Telangana Cracks Down on Cybercrime: Rs 85 Crore Returned to Victims

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has helped the return of Rs 85.05 crore to cyber fraud victims from March to July 2024, marking a major victory against cyber criminals. This achievement is an indication of the state’s determination to fight against the scourge of cybercrime and provide safety to its people.

Collaborative Efforts Yield Results

The partnership between the TGCSB and the Telangana State Legal Services Authority (TGLSA) led to this success. This initiative sought to tackle two main problems: firstly, slow registration of FIRS into cyber crimes, and secondly, banks’ prolonged holding of fraudulent funds.

Earlier, the Station House Officers (SHOs) found it hard to lodge FIRs via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). This led to an easier process and better ways of relaying information, hence a faster response and prosecution of offenders.

Tackling the “Holding Issue”

Another critical aspect was the issue of banks holding onto stolen funds. The TGCSB and TGLSA developed a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to expedite the return of these funds to victims. This SOP empowers District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) to handle petition filings under Section 457 of the CrPC more efficiently.

Importance of Immediate Action

The TGCSB emphasizes the importance of reporting cybercrime within the “golden hour”—the immediate timeframe after the fraud is discovered. Swift action increases the chances of freezing the stolen amount in the culprit’s accounts, allowing for a faster refund process.

Public Awareness Campaign

To empower citizens, the TGCSB urges victims to report cybercrime immediately by calling 1930 or visiting the CYBERCRIME.GOV.IN portal. Additionally, they remind the public that law enforcement agencies never request money transfers or verification via video calls.

Looking Ahead

The success of this initiative paves the way for a stronger legal framework in Telangana. This collaboration between the TGCSB, TGLSA, and the Telangana High Court demonstrates the state’s commitment to protecting citizens from the financial consequences of cybercrime.

Impact on Victims

The return of Rs 85.05 crore signifies a significant financial relief for thousands of victims. This tale of triumph acts as a glimmer of optimism, motivating the individuals who have been impacted to step up and bring to light occurrences related to online crimes. Moreover, it conveys a powerful warning to those engaged in cyber crimes that Telangana is in the process of putting an end to their activities.
