A cloud of fear hangs heavy over Chandigarh following the confession of a 38-year-old taxi driver, Monu Kumar, to the rape and murder of a third woman. Already in custody for two separate murders, Kumar’s chilling revelation has exposed a potential serial killer operating in the city.
The initial arrest of Kumar came on May 1, 2024, after a cold case investigation led him to the rape and murder of a 22-year-old MBA student in 2010. This development led to further scrutiny of past unsolved cases, particularly the murder of a 40-year-old woman in 2022. During questioning about the second case, Kumar confessed to a third murder, further shocking investigators.
The victim of the most recent crime was a 55-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh residing in Mohali. Her body was found on February 28, 2024, in a forested area near Sector 54, Chandigarh. According to police sources, the modus operandi in all three cases appears to be similar. The women were reportedly lured into Kumar’s taxi, possibly under the pretence of transportation. They were then driven to secluded locations, where they were allegedly assaulted, murdered, and robbed of their belongings.
“The similarities in the cases are quite disturbing,” told by senior police official. “The victims appear to have been chosen at random, and the manner of their deaths suggests a common pattern,” he added.
