Next round of talks between farmer leaders & Centre begins; farmer writes open letter to PM Modi’s mother Hiraben

Farmer leaders and representatives arrived at Vigyan Bhawan here on Friday for another round of talks with representatives of the Centre, including Union Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

On Thursday, one of fronts of protesting farmers, the Samkyukt Kisan Morcha rejected the government’s offer to put the three farm laws on hold for one-and-half-years to break the impasse over their protest against the same. They said that they want nothing but a complete repeal of all the three legislations.

The farmer leaders said that the repeal of three farm laws and law for MSP on all crops are basic demands which stand as they were until they are met.

They also paid tributes to 147 farmers who lost their lives during this agitation and vowed that their sacrifice won’t go waste.

The Supreme Court had in its interim order on January 12, moved to stay the implementation of the agricultural laws.

Punjab farmer writes open letter to PM Modi’s mother Hiraben

Harpreet Singh, a farmer from village Golu Ka Moud in Ferozepur – who was among the three men arrested for allegedly trying to hold without permission a protest in support of the farmers at the Ridge Maidan, Shimla – has written an open letter to Hiraben Modi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother.

Harpreet Singh said, “I have written this letter in the name of mother of PM Modi with a heavy heart. I am writing this letter with the expectation that your son, who is the Prime Minister of India, can withdraw the laws passed for the farmers. I thought any person can refuse anyone but not to the mother as the people of our country give the status of God to Mother. Dear Mother, Prime Minister of our country is your son and I feel that he will not refuse to you.”

Karandeep Sandhu, Harpreet Singh and Gurpreet Singh from Punjab’s Mohali and Chandigarh were arrested under Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC)

Section 107 (apprehension of breach of peace) and 151 (arrest to prevent cognizable offenses) as they had no permission either from the home department or from the deputy commissioner to hold the protest.  However, later on, they were released on bail.
