Sukhdev Singh held for Republic Day violence in Chandigarh

Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested an accused in the Republic Day violence in the national capital, Sukhdev Singh, from Chandigarh on Sunday. Police arrested the accused, who had ₹50,000 reward on his head, from Chandigarh after a 100 km chase. As per the reports, Delhi police was trying to trace the accused for the past ten days.

Earlier, the police had to face two failed attempts to arrest the Sukhdev Singh, the first attempt was made at his residence in Karnal, Haryana, and another was following a tip from Chandigarh. But days later, following another tip-off, the special task force learned that Singh’s latest location was near Centra Mall, Chandigarh, where the arrest was made.

Sukhdev Singh has been brought to the Delhi Police Crime Branch and will be presented before the court on Monday (February 8).

According to Delhi Police, Sukhdev Singh was leading the mob at the Red Fort and his role in the violence was found to be very active. As per the authorities, 38 FIRs have been registered and over 126 people have been arrested in relation to the Republic Day’s Red Fort violence. The authorities are also, repeatedly, going through the photos and videos taken during the violence for more leads.

On January 26, protestors broke barricades to enter Delhi, clashed with police and vandalised property in several parts. They also entered the Red Fort and unfurled their flags from its ramparts.

Police had also announced a reward of ₹50,000 each for the arrest of Jajbir Singh, Buta Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Iqbal Singh for their alleged involvement in the January 26 violence, according to the Delhi Police.

Farmers have been protesting at the different borders of the national capital since November 26 against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020
