For his selfless services and for sending home lakhs of migrants in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Sonu Sood has been conferred the prestigious SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The award was presented at a virtual ceremony on Monday evening. “This is a rare honour. A UN recognition is very special. I have done whatever little I have done, in my own humble way, for my fellow countrymen without any expectations. However, to be recognized and awarded feels good. I fully support the UNDP in its endeavours to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Planet Earth and mankind will greatly benefit from the implementation of these goals”, said Sood.
Angelina Jolie, David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Watson, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett, Antonio Banderas, Nicole Kidman and Priyanka Chopra have been similarly honoured by different UN bodies.
Some of his philanthropic services are:
• He sent home almost 9,100 migrants through 4 Shramik Trains to UP
• Arranged a Shramik Train to rescue 2,030 migrants from Mumbai and sent them to Bihar.
• Again arranged a Shramik train from Mumbai to Kolkata with 1,880 migrants.
• Sonu Sood arranged almost 39,389 counter-purchased tickets to send migrants home from Mumbai to Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Surat, Nashik, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and other cities and states. Moreover, 27,890 Tatkal tickets were paid for to fund destitute migrants headed home.
• He arranged buses for as many as 14,344 migrants from Mumbai to UP, Jharkhand and Bihar.
