The AAP on Sunday suffered a setback in the Sangrur Lok Sabha byelection as SAD (Amritsar) president and candidate Simranjit Singh Mann claimed victory.“My priority will be to raise the issue of the poor economic condition of Sangrur, including the condition of farmers under debt. We will work with the Punjab Government,” SAD (Amritsar) chief said after claiming the win.
It was a neck-and-neck between AAP’s Gurmail Singh and SAD-Amritsar president Mann, but the latter, a former Member of Parliament, gave a tough fight to AAP candidate and took significant lead over the AAP candidate.
Since the start of the counting, fight seemed to be between Mann and Gurmail as other candidates of various political parties failed to secure a good number of votes.
Meanwhile, Mann supporters have started converging outside of the Dhuri counting centre to celebrate the victory.
Sangrur is known as stronghold of AAP as many senior leaders, including CM Bhagwant Mann, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema and Aman Arora, belong to the city. All nine Assembly seats of the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency, including Sangrur, Barnala, Sunam, Dirba, Dhuri, Malerkotla, Bhadaur, Mehal Kalan and Lehra, are held by AAP MLAs.
