The Chandigarh education department unexpectedly decided to restore the ten headmistresses and school in-charges who had been suspended in May 2024. Their ban came after a well-publicized instance in which a con artist deceived cleaning staff members out of large sums of money by infiltrating and operating within many government institutions.
Raju, also known as Rajiv Kumar, is said to be the scheme’s mastermind. He pretended to be a contractor who had open bidding for the hiring of 100 cleaners, and he persuaded several ladies to offer large payments in exchange for these jobs. When Sunita, one of the victims, filed a complaint, claiming that she and numerous other people had paid Kumar Rs. 35,000 apiece, and later the whole tragedy came forward as a scam.
The initial response from the education department was swift and severe. The heads of the 10 schools where the scam unfolded were placed on immediate suspension for dereliction of duty. The department’s action was seen as a strong message against negligence and a commitment to accountability.
Nonetheless, the reinstatement of these individuals has been recommended at a recent meeting of the suspension review committee. The headmistresses and in-charges have been formally restored by the department after it accepted the suggestion.
The department’s position on accountability has come under scrutiny following the decision to restore the school heads. Although the reinstatement’s justifications have not been made public, the decision has drawn criticism from various places. Critics contend that holding authorities responsible is necessary to stop such incidents in the future and that the episode exposes major administrative failings at the institution.
