Sabyasachi’s new collection becomes target of memes

Clothing brand H&M revealed its new “Wanderlust” collection with Indian celebrity designer Sabyasachi, leaving some fans disappointed with the range.

According to a statement, the new collection dropped in selected stores on Thursday (12 August) which includes a sari in a first for the Swedish fast-fashion chain.

The brand also revealed that the clothes and accessories draw on Indian textile and print traditions from Sabyasachi’s Art Foundation mixed with contemporary silhouettes.

However, the entire collection was sold out just hours after it went online, leading to an outburst of disappointed fans on the Internet.

On August 14, 2021, Sabyasachi took to Instagram to virtually address the situation with his 4.7 million followers. Sabyasachi concluded his message saying, “There is a market ready for every single one of us and there is only one secret to unlock it – just be yourself. Whoever you are. Shamelessly.”

Many people were upset with the prices for what they describe as “very basic looking” clothes, with many trolling the collection on social media.

One person wrote: “The Sabyasachi X H&M collection went like ‘what if we took from Bombay Dyeing’s bedsheet and design [th]em loosely to resemble a saree in a curtain.’”

In fact, most people thought that the saree looked exactly like something one’s grandmother would wear. However, what bugged people more was that this very plain and average looking saree costs a whopping ₹9999.

One person compared a pair of pants to that of an “Indian bus conductor”.

Recently, the fashion giant Gucci sold an Indian kurta for Rs 2.5 lakh, and of course the internet had a field day.
