Re-polling at Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh

After the reports of violence and electoral irregularities, the Election Commission has mandated repolling at 11 police stations in Manipur’s inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituencies. The decision was made following incidents of intimidation, firing, and destruction of voting machines during the initial polling on April 19

The Chief Electoral Offices of Manipur announced on April 20 that fresh voting would take place at 11 stations, including locations in Khurai, Kshetrigao, Thongju, Uripok and Konthoujam constituencies as during the first phase of polling these areas witnessed disturbances. Due to this initial results from several locations have been nullified and a new round of voting has been called.

Similarly, in Arunachal Pradesh, the Election Commission ordered repolling at eight polling stations across the state. The polling stations include locations in Bameng, Nyapi, Nacho and Rumgong constituencies, where reports of violence and damage to electronic voting machines surface during the first phase of Lok Sabha and assembly elections

During these disturbances, clashes among the groups were reported. In Moirangkampu Sajeb Awang Leikai of Imphal, a civilian was also injured during these clashes. Instances of firing, voter intimidation, and destruction of voting machines further worsen the situation

Before the announcement of repolling, the Manipur Congress, led by President K Meghachandra, raised concerns over electoral integrity and demanded fresh voting at 47 stations. They alleged booth capturing and rigging, particularly highlighting 36 stations in the inner Manipur constituency and 11 in the outer Manipur constituencies. Both the BJP and Congress engaged in a blame game, accusing each other of inciting violence and violating the Model Code of Conduct.

History:

Manipur has been engulfed with ethnic violence since the previous year, adding complexity to the electoral process. Despite these challenges, Manipur has historically shown strong voter engagement, with a remarkable 82% turnout recorded in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Conclusion:

The Election Commission’s decision to conduct repolling underscores the importance of ensuring free and fair elections even amid tension and allegations of malpractices. As Manipur prepares for a fresh round of voting, the nation awaits the outcome, hoping for a peaceful and transparent electoral exercise.
