BJP’s councillor Ravi Kant Sharma became the new Chandigarh Mayor on Friday. He got 17 votes of the 24 polled, while Congress candidate Devinder Singh Babla got only five votes.
City MP Kirron Kher and councillor Heera Negi couldn’t attend the election because of poor health. After Ravi Kant Sharma was declared Mayor, all five Congress boycotted the Senior Deputy and Deputy Mayor polls, alleging cameras were used during the polls by the BJP.
The elections for the post of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the MC for 2021 commenced at 11 am today.
The Congress had only five councillors in the House, but it was hoping to get support of councillors of the BJP. Cross-voting won’t be a first for the party, as in 2019 elections, too, rebel candidate (Satish Kainth) had managed to get 11 votes.
In an order issued on Thursday, the MC Secretary stated that no mobile phone, camera or any electronic gadget will be allowed in the Assembly Hall of the civic body during the election process.

SAD Chandigarh head and Councillor Hardeep Singh said that both BJP and Congress have appealed to vote in their own favour. “But we demand that the three agricultural laws are withdrawn, only then we will vote,” he said. The party did not vote for anyone in the mayoral election but opposed it. As a protest, Singh went to the House wearing a black kurta.
