The Leader of the Opposition and Congress Member Rahul Gandhi has claimed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is preparing an operation against him in retaliation for his recent address in Parliament during which he criticised the central administration by referring to the notion of ‘Chakravyuh’. Gandhi said he had heard about the upcoming raid from sources inside the ED and that he was prepared to welcome the agency.
The statements come after Gandhi’s July 29 Lok Sabha speech in which he denounced Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Budget 2024, claiming that the policies of the government are negatively impacting youth, workers, and farmers. He made comparisons between the current political situation and the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, drawing a comparison between the government’s activities and the legendary trap of ‘Chakravyuh’ that ultimately resulted in the death of the hero Abhimanyu.
The nation’s fabric is harmed by the dominance of a few powerful persons, as Gandhi characterised the contemporary political situation as a new kind of ‘Chakravyuh’. He stressed that the middle class, which had earlier shown ardent support for the administration, had suffered as a result of the budget.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur responded by criticizing Gandhi’s usage of Mahabharata allusions and implying that he had a cursory knowledge of the epic. According to Thakur, during its rule, the Congress party has a history of setting up several political traps, or “Chakravyuhs.”
Prime Minister Modi praised Thakur’s speech, emphasizing how he successfully refuted Gandhi’s assertions with a mix of humour and factual knowledge. Both parties are still involved in a heated political debate as the Parliamentary budget session continues; it ends on August 12.
