Punjab’s 13 Lok Sabha Seats Voting: June 1, 2024

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on Saturday. The election dates are divided into 7 phases, voting for the first phase commences on April 19 while the much anticipated Punjab voting will take place In the final phase on June 1st, 2024 polling for the 13 Lok Sabha seats with votes being counted on June 4th.

This year’s election holds immense significance with 97 crore registered voters, it is estimated to be the world’s largest democratic election. This includes 1,8 crore first-time voters and 19.74 crore between the age of 20-29 years old. These are the youth-focused elections. This year ECI has also made a sure representation of diverse groups as well, such as Persons with Disabilities, transgender voters, and service electors.

Elections in Punjab have presented themselves with intriguing content. The breakdown between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Sad) has made path for a multi-party race.

The Contenders are:

Congress: Congress aims to retain its dominance by securing 8 seats, mirroring 2019 elections. However, this target seems difficult as the party faces the challenge of addressing public concerns

BJP: The party strategy seems to be capitalizing on national issues and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charisma. Ongoing farmer protests can negatively impact the whole campaign of the party

Aam Aadmi Party: The Party is on a positive vibe after its victories in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh and looking forward to a win in Punjab as well. This party has already announced its candidates for 8 seats, highlighting their aggressive approach.

Shiromani Akali dal: It will be an uphill battle for SAD as internal conflicts and the absence of the BJP alliance have almost crumbled the party.

With the announcements of dates for the General Election 2024, the model of conduct has also been enforced to ensure free and fair elections. The main purpose of the model of conduct is to ensure that ruling parties, at the center and in the states do not misuse their position.
