Punjabi University VC BS Ghuman resigns

Punjabi University vice-chancellor (VC) BS Ghuman has resigned after remaining a little over three years on the post.

He submitted his resignation to Punjab governor VP Singh Badnore, who is the chancellor of the university. Badnore forwarded the resignation to the Punjab chief secretary and the chief principal secretary to the CM.

The development was confirmed by Secretary Higher Education Rahul Bhandar, “The resignation was received by the Punjab government late Wednesday evening.”

In his resignation sent on November 17 (Tuesday), Ghuman has cited personal reasons for the decision.

Dr Ghuman was given an extension only two months ago. Sources said the VC had been visiting Chandigarh frequently as the university has been facing financial difficulties. His office had also demanded a special grant of ₹300 crore from the state government to tackle the financial situation to little benefit.

The Governor office had on the other hand constituted a high-level three-member committee to look into the financial and administrative situation at the university in August. The panel included Viswajeet Khanna, Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Higher education secretary Rahul Bhandari and the VC himself. The teaching and non-teaching faculty members have been staging protest in front of his officer since last three months over demands of timely release of salaries, pensions and others.
