Punjab teacher among 47 selected for National Teachers Award

One teacher from Punjab is among the 47 teachers selected for National Awards to Teachers, 2020. List of the selected teachers was released by Ministry of Education, Government of India, on Friday night.

Rajinder Kumar is a teacher at the Government Primary School, Wara Bhaika village, in Faridkot district. He has been working since 2008 and his wife Harinder Kaur is also a teacher. Both are post-graduates in applied physics.

Manoj Kumar Lakhra, a teacher from Gurugram, and Nardev Singh, a lecturer from Hamirpur, have also been selected from Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, respectively.

Process of selection

The statement said, “The Ministry of Education, Department of School Education & Literacy, constituted an Independent Jury at National Level to select the award recipients for the year 2020. This Independent Jury at National Level reviewed the list of 153 teachers as shortlisted by all the 36 State & UT Selection Committees and 7 Organisation Selection Committees through Video Conferencing. The Jury considered the applications and presentations made by all shortlisted teachers and after detailed deliberations recommended the names of the 47 teachers for the National Awards to Teachers, 2020, and Education Minister approved the same.”

About the award

This award was instituted in 1958 to felicitate teachers and head masters who improve the quality of school education and enrich the students’ learning experiences. The awards are given away by the President or the Vice President on September 5 (Teacher’s Day) each year to give public recognition to meritorious teachers working in primary, middle and secondary schools.
