Punjab Kings, on May 15th, 2024 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, restored their flagging playoffs ambitions with a stunning 5-wicket triumph over Rajasthan Royals in a wonderful game having many thrills and freights, thus revitalizing their bid for a coveted playoff berth.
After winning the coin toss, Rajasthan Royals decided to bat, but early wickets were quickly lost by the Punjab Kings. Yashasvi Jaiswal together with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, two openers, never hit any runs of importance and things began deteriorating. Despite the valiant efforts of skipper Sanju Samson to stabilize the innings, his departure for a mere 18 runs further compounded the Royals’ woes, leaving them in dire straits.
Riyan Parag emerged as the sole figure opposing among the debris with a hard fought 48 ball run from 34 runs which somewhat dignified the total of the Royals. Nonetheless, a spirited show from Punjab Kings bowlers such as Sam Curran, Rahul Chahar and Harshal Patel denied him the chance to steer his team to a competitive total.
Surging ahead, the Kings were off to a poor start as they lost opener Mayank Agarwal quite early. The ship, however, was steadied by captain KL Rahul and Jonny Bairstow through a calm partnership that was placed high in the batting lineup. The experienced duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone took charge at that time to steady the Kings anxiously across the line. Dhawan’s stylish strokeplay combined with Livingstone’s daring hitting saw the Kings through; it was Livingstone who won them the game with a tremendous six and four off the last six deliveries.

It was at this point that the fragility of the Royals’ batting order became apparent and the Punjab Kings’ fortune was tipped in their favour. In the wider scheme of things, combat victory revives the Punjab Kings’ quest for a playoff position, throwing them up to fifth on the points table and raising the hope of their devoted followers once more.
