Power generation at five thermal plants stalled in Punjab

Shortage of coal in the state due to suspension of goods trains has increased the concern of Punjab government. The government has sought information from Powercom about the stock of coal in private thermal plants including the government. Powercom is currently procuring 1000 MW of power to meet the supply of electricity in the state at a cost of around ₹60 crore. According to Powercom officials, the report has been sent to the government and a decision will be taken soon.

Due to non-availability of coal in the state, power generation has been completely stalled in all three private thermal plants as well as two government thermal plants.

Protesting farmer outfits in Punjab have been sitting on more than 23 railway tracks of the state for their demands for more than 35 days. Although they have assured to vacate the railway track by November 5, but some farmers’ unions are still sitting on the track. Due to this, the railways have completely stopped the operation of goods trains and its direct effect can be seen on power generation in Punjab.

The concern of the Punjab government has increased due to the possibility of blackout in the state.

According to the Railway Board, more than 200 goods racks have been stuck in Punjab due to disrupting tracks of farmers. The Punjab government is constantly trying to persuade the farmers agitating against agricultural laws.
