PGI, GMCH- 32 to conduct sero survey in Chandigarh to prepare for third Covid wave

A sero survey will be conducted in Chandigarh from next week to detect the prevalence of Covid-19 among residents by Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) and Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32.

The sero survey will help prepare for the third wave by assessing the spread of infection in the second wave of Covid. Manoj Parida, advisor to the administrator, says that both the hospitals will meet in the next few days and decide the strategy, after which the survey will start. Based on the results of the survey, the next strategy will be decided.

Based on the study of the results of this community survey, the administration will make an action plan for the prevention of this pandemic in the future.

According to the information, PGI and GMCH-32 will start the survey by dividing the areas of the city. In this, antibodies will be tested by taking blood samples of people from different parts of the city. The sample will include people from different ages, from children to the elderly. Through the sero survey, it will be ascertained that what percent of the city was infected with Covid during the second wave.

Health Secretary Arun Kumar Gupta said that with mutual cooperation, the administration of both the hospitals will decide their respective duties, so that there is no confusion.

What is a sero survey?

Sero survey examines how many people in a population have been infected with Covid-19 and recovered from it. It is done to identify the prevalence of the virus in a particular area.

The survey is conducted by using an antibody test, also known as a serology test. It examines if an individual’s immune system has responded to the infection. It is important to carry out the survey to know the prevalence of the disease in the population as only cases reported to the authorities are known. But, there are several cases that don’t come to the notice for various reasons such as asymptomatic or people didn’t report. So, the sero survey gives a rough idea of the population exposed to the virus. The sero survey also helps in knowing what percentage of a population has developed immunity against virus.
