To maintain the teacher-student ratio, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, is preparing to recruit 26 assistant professors by March. In addition, 21 contractual teachers may also be hired. However, a final decision is yet to be taken. The process of checking the applications for permanent teachers is expected to start in January.
Moreover, Panjab University (PU) wants to improve its score on NAAC. If it is successful in recruiting teachers, that will also have an impact on the ranking.
Last year, 26 assistant professors posts were left vacant and applications are sought for this. More than a 1,000 applications have arrived and its process was about to begin but was stopped by the syndicate. It was said that the vacancies were not valid. PU administration officials had argued that it was necessary to recruit teachers as the student-teacher ratio was not being maintained. Many questions were raised; hence, it got the green signal to fill the vacancies.
In 2015, NAAC visited PU and at that time it was found that the number of teachers was less and number of students was more. In such a situation, the teaching was being affected. NAAC’s team had made it clear that teachers should be recruited.
