Panic buttons to be installed in all buses of Punjab: Capt Amarinder Singh

To make the journey of women and children safe in Punjab, panic buttons will be installed in government and non-government buses, said Punjab chief minister (CM) Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday.

The process of installing vehicle location tracking devices in government buses at a cost of ₹15.50 crore is on. The CM that the installation of this device has been done in all buses of PUNBUS and in half of PRTC buses in Punjab. 

He also said that a project of setting up state-of-the-art command control centres and four regional centres for tracking vehicles on state roads is on. He said that this project will help women and children to take action in case of an emergency, online challans of over speeding vehicles will be sent, and the validity of insurance and pollution certificate can be checked. 

He also announced a mini-bus permit policy and virtually distributed 3,000 permits to the rural youth as part of his government’s ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar te Karobar’ mission. Singh said another 8,000 permits would be distributed the rest of the year, taking the total to 11,000. This will generate both direct and indirect employment and there is no deadline for rural youths to apply for the permits.

The CM directed the Transport Department to create a user-friendly online facility within the next three months for receipt and processing of applications of all bus permits to make the system more transparent and eliminate corruption, according to a government statement.
