In Panchkula, sanitation workers have called off their one-week strike after robust conversations between Municipal Corporation (MC) delegates and representatives from the Safai Karamcharis Union (SKU). Having reached a mutual understanding with the civic body, these workers who had laid down tools to press for many demands including salary arrears, better comfort at work and employment security among other issues are now back on duty.
For the sanitation workers, the main point of disagreement was the failure to pay salary arrears that went back to November 2017. The municipal corporation has made a substantial concession by agreeing to provide a proposal at the next public meeting for the clearing of these dues. All council members must, however, give their assent before it can be finalised.
Beyond the salary issue, the workers’ demands also encompassed the welfare of their families. The union has secured a promise from the MC to introduce a scholarship scheme for the children of sanitation workers who excel academically. Additionally, the corporation has committed to purchasing 100 new carts for the workers to facilitate their duties.
A crucial demand for job security has also been addressed. The MC has agreed to employ one family member of a sanitation worker who died while in service. To ensure transparency, a committee comprising two sanitation staff members will be formed to oversee the implementation of this policy.
To enhance the general working conditions of sanitation workers, the local government has promised that they will give them a monthly allowance for soap and oil among other expenses. Furthermore, a proposal to offer an advance on wheat purchases to municipal employees will be submitted to the state government for approval.
Both the people of Panchkula and the sanitation workers are relieved that the lengthy strike has come to an end. The workers have reaped monetary rewards, and the city has avoided the health risks and disruption that come with a protracted waste issue.
It is essential that the municipal corporation fulfils its obligations and promptly puts the agreed-upon actions into action. This will not only show how sincere the municipal body is, but it will also help the sanitation staff’s working conditions and morale.
