Two cricketing giants experienced mixed blessings during the T20 World Cup on Sunday, June 16th. On one hand, Pakistan managed to score a win against lowly Ireland but on the other, Scotland would find no solace in their loss to mighty Australia.
Pakistan Stutter But Survive Against Ireland
The impressive bowling by Shaheen Afridi (3/22) and Imad Wasim (3/8) played a major role, as they successfully limiting Ireland to only 106 runs. Pakistan, which had been eliminated from the Super Eights, however, nevertheless won this game against Ireland with three wickets at Central Broward Park Stadium in Florida.
Pakistan’s chase, however, was far from convincing. Their much-vaunted batting line-up faltered once again, with only skipper Babar Azam (32 not out) showing some resolve. The middle order crumbled under pressure, leaving Pakistan needing a late cameo from Shaheen Afridi to seal the win with two balls to spare. While the victory brought some relief after a disappointing tournament, Pakistan’s batting woes remain a concern.
Australia Maintains Perfect Record With Clinical Display
In St Lucia, Australia defeated Scotland with ease by five wickets at hand securing their flawless record in the event. Australia batted first, scoring an imposing 186. Stoinis’ all-round skills were highlighted as he scored 18 runs from 5 balls. However, even though Scotland made brave attempts, they lost with just 6 runs behind Australia.

Australia’s bowling attack, spearheaded by the fiery pace of Pat Cummins and the experience of Mitchell Starc, proved too strong for the Scottish batters. Chasing a daunting target, Scotland was able to maintain their pace initially, with their captain Kyle Coetzer (72) leading the fightback. However, wickets at crucial junctures halted their momentum, and they were eventually bowled out for 180 runs.
These contrasting results highlight the gulf in experience and firepower between the two teams. While Pakistan seeks answers and a turnaround in form, Australia looks near-unbeatable as they march towards the knockout stages.
