Nyay Seva Kendra for women inmates to be inaugurated at Burail Jail

The Nyay Seva Kendra is going to be inaugurated on Wednesday to provide facilities to women prisoners in Burail Jail. The Nyay Seva Kendra will be inaugurated by the Punjab and Haryana High Court judge and State Legal Services Authority co-executive chairman Jaswant Singh, CJM cum secretary of District Legal Services Authority Ashok Kumar Mann and member secretary Mahavir Singh.

Last week, a team of five women officers, experts from the Legal Services Authority, Health, Education, Social Welfare and Prisons Department, had organised a campaign at the jail wherein, 46 women prisoners were interviewed. Trial of 36 prisoners is underway, while 10 are guilty. There are also three children aged between 1 to 2 years in the prison. On Monday, the State Legal Services Authority had released the report on these prisoners.

Justice Jaswant Singh said that the jail is built according to the needs of men. Female prisoners receive minimal investment as the numbers are low which gives them lesser facilities. Legal assistance, educational programmes and child protection services will be provided to women in the Nyay Seva Kendra from 9am to 12 from Monday to Friday. Some female prisoners had stated that they wanted to complete their studies and another wanted to read books and newspapers. As many as 10 inmates are graduates and around three have MBAs.
