In a late-night message, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “We’re all here defending our independence, our country, and it will stay this way.” Meanwhile, the US government joined European countries in slapping sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Amid the chaos, Russia vetoed a UN resolution deploring “aggression” in Ukraine even as UN chief Antonio Guterres said Russian soldiers “need to return to their barracks”.
