Municipal Corporation Opens Ninth ‘One Rupee Store’ in Maloya

Launching its ninth ‘One Rupee Store’ at the EWS community centre in Maloya, the Municipal Corporation (MC) of Chandigarh is making a big step towards sustainability and giving the impoverished access to reasonably priced commodities. Launched as part of the ongoing “Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao” campaign, which emphasises the value of decreasing waste and promotes the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle (3Rs), the store sells a selection of necessary commodities at the minimum price of Re 1.

Mayor Kuldeep Kumar presided over the inaugural event, assisted by MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra and local council member Nirmala Devi. Prominent community members, top Municipal Corporation executives, and other local council members were present to celebrate the new store’s opening.

In his address, Mayor Kuldeep Kumar highlighted the success of the MC’s permanent RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) centre in Sector 17, which has seen an overwhelming response from citizens since its launch. He emphasized that the ‘One Rupee Store’ initiative is a continuation of this effort, aimed at making essential items accessible to those in need while fostering a culture of sustainability within the community.

Like its predecessors, the “One Rupee Store” in Maloya sells a variety of goods for only Re 1, including toys, books, electronics, clothes, crockery, cookware, and bed linens. In addition to giving those who are economically challenged a more inexpensive shopping alternative, the program fosters recycling and trash reduction in the neighbourhood by collecting and distributing useful things.

The MC’s dedication to growing these businesses around the city is a reflection of its overarching objective of using creative, neighbourhood-based solutions to solve social welfare issues as well as environmental ones. The program is anticipated to have a good influence on many families and advance the principles of sustainability and responsible consumerism as additional stores open.
